Nick Harrison is an experienced educator, passionate leader and innovative changemaker, with extensive experience developing student-centred programs that challenge the traditional school paradigm. After completing a Science degree at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Evolutionary Ecology, and a Diploma in Exercise and Sports Science, Nick undertook a Diploma of Education in 1999. Over the next six years, Nick balanced part time teaching with running. In fact, Nick represented Australia in the marathon at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. After winning the Melbourne Marathon in 2005, Nick retired from professional running to focus on his passion – guiding young people through the secondary years of their education. Nick led the development of programs in a range of educational environments including large independent schools in Melbourne, before moving to the Sunshine Coast where he has focussed on non-traditional school settings, including the creation of a senior program in a Montessori school, and the successful implementation of the International Baccalaureate career related program. Nick is aware that the world is rapidly changing, as are the needs of industry. Education needs to be agile and adaptive, and create pathways for young people to develop the skills and qualities needed to be successful beyond school. Young people need to be exposed to the world of work to authentically develop these skills. Nick currently serves as the Principal of a deliberately different school, the Australian Industry Trade College. Here young people are supported to find their passion, complete secondary school and gain a head start in their industry career.
